MODERN MASTERS
AUSTRALIAN PREMIERE & FESTIVAL EXCLUSIVE

CHARLES LLOYD NEW QUARTET (USA)

OPENING ACT: ANDREA KELLER QUARTET

"Lloyd is one of the greats, rather like Joan Miro in modern art, he has no peer save himself. Music of total transport and delight."
Jazzwise

"Charles Lloyd is an international treasure."
Carlos Santana

Charles Lloyd's influence dates back to the 1960s, when his groundbreaking early recordings established him as one of the first jazz musicians to sell more than one million records. The Memphis-born saxophonist and flautist formed his first quartet in 1965 with the now legendary pianist Keith Jarrett, bassist Cecil McBee and drummer Jack DeJohnette. Their stunning crossover recording Forest Flower made Lloyd an international star.

After many years away from the public eye, Lloyd has emerged with a quartet set to become one of the next pivotal groups in jazz, featuring the acclaimed gifts of Jason Moran, Reuben Rogers, and Eric Harland. Drawing together music styles from around the world with a deep sense of spirituality, exotic structures and virtuosic group playing, this will be a mesmerising concert as one of the true legends of jazz performs at the height of his powers, embellished by three of today's most exciting young jazz musicians.

The opening act for this concert will be a performance by the acclaimed Andrea Keller Quartet. An award-winning pianist, composer and arranger, Andrea Keller is a major force on the Australian jazz scene and has more recently started to make her mark across Europe. Over the last decade she has won numerous ARIA and Bell awards for her compositions and recordings. The Age said, 'One of this country's most daring and fascinating composers, she produces work that bristles with surprises, a powerful blend of European lyricism with space and improvisation.'
