"All my inspiration comes from Ahmad Jamal." Miles Davis "He is a virtuoso." Stanley Crouch, The Village Voice Profoundly influential, endlessly innovative, majestic and gracious, jazz piano virtuoso Ahmad Jamal remains one of the few elder statesmen left in the ever-shrinking pantheon of certified jazz greats. A major influence on Miles Davis' classic quintet with John Coltrane in the late 1950s, Jamal's intricate use of space and rhythm has created many haunting musical landscapes during his long career. Born in 1930, Jamal was a child prodigy, beginning his piano studies at the age of three and signed as a recording artist in his late teens. Renowned for his outstanding technical command and distinctive sound as a piano stylist, Jamal has built a career-long catalogue of iconic jazz repertoire. Trombonist Shannon Barnett (2007 Young Australian Jazz Artist of the Year) is one of Australia's most respected young jazz musicians, having performed with international artists such as Charlie Haden, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Eddie Floyd and Barney McAll, as well as local artists like The Black Arm Band, Vada, Andrea Keller and Paul Grabowsky. During the past twelve months she has ventured into new territory, performing around Australia with Circus Oz, playing both upright and upside down! |
