Composer and percussionist John Hollenbeck's journey has been one of the most remarkable in contemporary music. Building on a wealth of experience in jazz and world styles as well as a deep interest in contemporary composition and spiritual practice, he has forged a lyrical new musical language, as accessible and expressive as it is advanced. A protégé of Bob Brookmeyer, he is has received a vast number of international awards and fellowships for his bold compositions for small and large ensembles.
Performing in Australia for the first time, the wry composer presents a program featuring the Australian premiere of Joys and Desires, his critically acclaimed work for large ensemble, featuring New York vocalist Theo Bleckmann and Australia's Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra in a world premiere collaboration.
Hollenbeck also performs with his Claudia Quintet, who have, since forming in 1997, built a worldwide reputation as one of the most startlingly original and exciting jazz groups performing today. The band features some of the leading names in the New York scene and has forged a new creative sound incorporating complex polyphony and rhythmic structures with elements of minimalism and krautrock.
