MILES DAVIS: PRINCE OF DARKNESS

A TRIBUTE BY THE AUSTRALIAN ART ORCHESTRA / PAUL GRABOWSKY

"...an ensemble rich in power, subtlety, tonal colors and solo strength unmatched by any other group in the country."
The Australian

The Australian Art Orchestra returns to its jazz roots with a stunning new musical work inspired by the legendary jazz trumpeter Miles Davis. Widely considered one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century, Davis was at the forefront of almost every major development in jazz from World War II to the 1990s.

Miles Davis: Prince of Darkness explores this extraordinary oeuvre through new arrangements of his seminal works, a performance of the original Gil Evans composition Sketches of Spain and a World Premiere of Anthony Pateras' Untitled which was commissioned specifically for this project. The Australian Art Orchestra is Australia's premiere contemporary music ensemble mining the rich ground between jazz and classical traditions and between western and non-western music. The AAO is a bold leader, a pioneer in its field, playing a vitally important role in developing music that is truly contemporary, identifiably Australian in its character and universally resonant in its perspective. The world premiere performance of Miles Davis: Prince of Darkness will be one of the unmissable highlights of the 2010 Melbourne International Jazz Festival.
