The Melbourne International Jazz Festival is honoured to present the Australian premiere of the remarkable Sangam, a trio featuring the transcendent musical gifts of revered American jazz saxophonist Charles Lloyd with Indian tabla master Zakir Hussain and drummer Eric Harland. Charles Lloyd formed the group in 2004 in honour of his lifelong friend, drummer Billy Higgins. Sangam's powerful performances quickly became something of legend. More than entertainment, the group presents the powerful uncorrupted expression of beauty through music. This exclusive performance features Zakir Hussain in his only Australian appearance. Hussain is today appreciated in the music world as an international phenomenon. A classical tabla virtuoso of the highest order, his consistently brilliant performances have not only established him as a national treasure in his own country, India, but gained him worldwide acclaim. Together with the masterful young drummer Eric Harland, Lloyd and Hussain will weave a musical experience that profoundly touches the spirit. |
