As a part of the Festival Opening celebrations, wander down St Kilda Road to the National Gallery of Victoria and step into Hybrids and Folklore, a colourful performance installation exploring sound-making and improvisation in the natural environment. Featuring a line-up of celebrated Australian visual artists and musicians, the event will re-imagine the NGV Sculpture Garden in a rapturous roaming performance incorporating improvisation, naturalist sound art, psychedelic folk, interactive sound stations and down-right weird and wonderful music from respected artists including The Deadnotes, Hi God People, Joel Stern, Clocked Out Duo with David Chesworth, Snawklor, Terra Asstralis and Cor Fuhler with Kim Myhr and Dale Gorefinkel. Hybrids and Folklore will excite the imagination of young and old with colour and sound and recast the NGV Sculpture Garden in a way never seen before. The Dead Notes: Hailing from Brisbane, this four-piece ensemble (Eugene Carchesio, Stuart Busby, Leighton Craig, Sandra Selig) specialises in playing two notes, on four instruments for one minute. Having made hundreds of recordings, the group's spontaneous pop haiku combines a non-musician's approach to group play, garnished with a punk sensibility. Expect squeaky pedals, leaky valves, false starts and early endings. Joel Stern: Based in Brisbane, Joel Stern is an internationally acclaimed researcher and practitioner of experimental music sound, performing regularly in collaboration with a wide variety of filmmakers and visual artists at festivals around the world. Joel's performance collaboration with filmmaker Sally Golding, as Abject Leader, has seen the duo widely recognised as Australia's premier exponents of contemporary expanded cinema. Snawklor: Formed ten years ago by artists Dylan Martorell and Nathan Gray, Snawklor as a duo make improvised electro acoustic music and sound installation with whatever is at hand including exotic instruments, field recordings, toys and electronics. Sometimes performing as a trio with Duncan Blachford on drums, they explore the possibilities available only in louder volumes. Hi God People: Based in Melbourne, this performance and sound art collective (Julian Williams, Dylan Martorell, Dion Nania, Greg Wadley) have supported the likes of Sonic Youth and the Residents. Performing music which can soar like a kite or screech like a car crash, they are renowned for their collaborative shows with guests from Melbourne's art community, often including absurdist theatre and outlandish costumes. Kim Myhr (Norway): Kim Mhyr is a musician and composer in the field of improvised and contemporary music. Having studied at Boston's Berklee College of Music, he has since worked in many different settings with performances throughout Europe, Australia, Asia and North America. The consideration of nothing is important in his music: to take no existing element for granted and to build music from nothing. Cor Fuhler: Cor Fuhler is dedicated to exploring the sound possibilities of the piano, playing a wide variety of electronic and acoustic instruments, and building his own instruments including the keyolin, a violin combined with a keyboard. Working on a wide variety of collaborative projects, Fuhler regularly performs at festivals around the world. Dale Gorfinkel: Dale Gorfinkel is a musician, instrument builder and installation artist who has performed at festivals around the world to great acclaim. His work involves building automated mechanical sculptures based on his unique approach to the vibraphone. He creates wondrous sonorities using continuous bowed inventions on aluminum bars, swinging tin resonators and ping pong balls that create random rhythms. Clocked Out Duo with David Chesworth: Clocked Out Duo uses traditional and modified instruments alongside a bewildering array of toys, found objects, junk and sound sculptures to create a carefully designed sonic and visual experience. For their first trio collaboration they have joined with David Chesworth, famed for his seminal post-punk experimental group Essendon Airport and more recently the David Chesworth Ensemble.
