Jazz Westside

Las Palmas (Footscray Library Forecourt)

Over MIJF’s opening weekend, we’re transforming the Footscray Library Forecourt into a breezy outdoor jazz club. Grab a drink from the pop-up bar on Saturday night for a celebration of Afro-Jazz, then kick back on Sunday with fun for the whole family, followed by an afternoon of Afro-Cuban beats.

6:00pm – GP Saxy Ensemble
Originating from Lagos, Nigeria, Olugbade Okunade aka GP Saxy is a multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer who is passionate about keeping the real sound of Nigerian Afrobeat alive. Blending Afrobeat with highlife and jazz, GP Saxy promises to transport you to the depths of Lagos with this collection of afro-funky sounds.

7:30pm – Solomon Sisay
Local Ethio-Jazz saxophonist Solomon Sisay shot to fame playing for Axumite Band, a legendary outfit in Ethiopia. Now based in Melbourne, his star has continued to rise both locally and internationally.

8:45pm – Black Jesus Experience
Black Jesus Experience is a 10-piece Ethio-funk supertrip. Their sound is a danceable alloy of traditional Ethiopian song and 21st century groove, drawing on the vocal prism of hip-hop, the soul of funk, and the freedom of jazz, with the unique voice and insightful truth of Ethiopia’s Enushu Taye.

11:00am – Kidstruments Live! by Playable Streets
Who says the adults have the best ideas? Kidstruments takes the imagined instruments of bright young minds developed in an interactive Melbourne Fringe workshop and turns them into real-life musical gadgets. They make their debut played by jazz collective I Hold the Lion’s Paw.

For information on joining a free Kidstruments workshop at either Footscray Library, West Footscray Library, or Braybrook Library on Monday 19th September click here.

12:30pm – La Influencia
Afro-Cuban powerhouse La Influencia is the brainchild of Salvador Persico (Blue King Brown) and Daniel Mougerman (The Bamboos). Performing original music, as well as the music of modern Cuban legends Alain Perez and Havana D’Primera, the band is made up of some of Australia’s finest musicians.
