Jazz is a way of life – my way of life.

It’s such an honour to be the Melbourne International Jazz Festival’s Artistic Director, especially as this year represents 11 years in the role.

I’m very proud of our international reputation. Great musicians from all over the world talk about wanting to be part of our inclusive Festival.

Jazz is a powerful communicator globally; it is for everyone, children, the young, the old, women, men and individuals of all races and genders.

After more than two decades of presenting the most beautiful musicians as part of our program, I can declare that MIJF is contributing to a very strong tradition that we can pass on into the future.

Headlining our 2019 Festival is the incredible serial innovator Herbie Hancock, still influencing musicians around the world.

Opening night will be a synergistic meeting of my two loves, jazz and classical music, as we again collaborate with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra playing Gershwin, featuring extraordinary vocalists Laura Mvula and Jose James and conductor, the ever-inventive Troy Miller.

I look forward to seeing you at some of the amazing concerts this year!
