“I got away from the kind of music where I just played piano…I wanted to get back to that.”

Piano virtuoso Billy Childs’ began his career in his teens, playing professionally and making his recording debut while touring Japan at just 19. Forty years on, he’s a five-time GRAMMY winner, a revered classical and jazz composer, and a prolific recording artist both as a bandleader and as a collaborator.

Childs’ is considered to be one of the greatest pianists working in music, not just in jazz. His latest album, the 2018 Best Jazz Instrumental Album GRAMMY-winning Rebirth, is a return to the hard-bop playing of his early releases.

We caught up with Childs ahead of his Melbourne International Jazz Festival appearance where he will play Rebirth, one night only at The Melbourne Recital Centre.

Listen in as he tells us why he’s returning to his roots, what audiences can expect from his show and what he loves about Melbourne.
