Alister Spence is recognised as one of Australia’s most original, distinctive contemporary jazz pianists/composers. With a performing and composing career spanning more than 25 years, his wide-ranging talents have led him to perform with and compose for some of the world’s most respected artists in the areas of contemporary music, improvisation, film and theatre. We are delighted to have Alister here soon in residency to present 'Kira Kira,' a commissioned work especially for MIJF 2017. We caught up with him as we get closer to the premiere!

Five minutes...with Rafael Jerjen from MaxMantis
Rafael Jerjen is a nationally recognised bass player, composer and sought after sideman. Born in Basel, Switzerland, he moved to Australia with his parents at age 6. He graduated from his Bachelor of Jazz with first class honours, majoring in performance on double bass from the Australian National University. These days, he resides back in Switzerland and plays with trio, MaxMantis. We caught up with Rafael ahead of their MIJF appearance.

Five minutes with... Ginny Bloop from The Steve McQueens
The Steve McQueens is a neo-vintage soul-funk band, with a penchant for groove, and making music that just feels good. This quintet from Singapore have been defining their own style of jazz infused neo-soul, a groove-based hybrid of tightly arranged and freely improvised sounds. Ahead of their trip to Australia for the Festival we caught up with vocalist Ginny Bloop. The Steve McQueens will be performing with the Brenton Foster 6tet at the Darebin Arts Centre on Friday 2 June.
