Dead Weight

Jazz takes over the gym in this ambitious site-specific work devised, composed and directed by German-based Australian trombonist and composer Shannon Barnett.

First developed in Germany in 2018, the Australian premiere of ‘Dead Weight’ will see Barnett team up with a stellar line-up of 18 musicians in the most unlikely of jazz venues, the historic Melbourne City Baths.

Embark on a surprising, curious and humorous journey, as you navigate through various gym spaces, encountering truly unique performances in each – ‘Fahrrad Frei’ for saxophones and exercise bikes, ‘Skin Deep’ for three singers and female changeroom, ‘End of the Bargain’ for three double basses, cello and rowing machine, and ‘Deep Work’ for power funk band and fitness instructor.
