Featuring Iro Haarla
Tuesday 18 October, 9:30PM
“Few jazz artists are as successful as Haarla in creating a world, a scope of feeling, and making it their own.” – Jazztime
Sweeping concert harp sets the stage for this world premiere from ARIA Award-winning bassist and composer Jonathan Zwartz, commissioned by the Sydney Improvised Music Association. Exploring Nordic minimalism, Suite Suomi features distinguished and long-standing ECM recording artist Iro Haarla, whose sound has been described by All About Jazz as “fluid and deeply melodic, while retaining a certain melancholy that is reflective of her environment”.
Subtle and expansive, listeners are taken on a journey through remote landscapes of light and shade reflecting Haarla’s northern roots, echoed by Zwartz’s love of evoking environment and mood through music.
The full line-up for this incredible performance includes Iro Haarla (concert harp), Jonathan Zwartz (bass), Phil Slater (trumpet), Julien Wilson (tenor sax), Ben Hauptmann (guitar), and Hamish Stuart (drums).
