A tribute to one of the most remarkable moments in the history of jazz.

In 1958, a quiet Harlem street became the backdrop for one of the most remarkable moments in jazz history: a single photograph capturing 57 of the greatest jazz musicians of the era. Jean Bach’s A Great Day in Harlem is a warm, insightful documentary that brings this legendary image to life, weaving together rare footage, interviews and stories that celebrate the vibrant community behind the music.

More than a snapshot, the film is a tribute to the golden age of jazz and the creative spirit that united its pioneers — from Count Basie and Dizzy Gillespie to Thelonious Monk and Sonny Rollins.

A Great Day in Harlem is part of MIJF’s Jazz on Film series, taking place at ACMI, Fed Square and Palace Penny Lane Cinema.
