The JazzLab

A heartfelt celebration of one of Australian jazz’s most beloved figures.

Profoundly influential drummer, composer, poet and mentor Allan Browne OAM was a driving force in shaping Australian jazz over his remarkable five-decade career. His legendary Monday night residency at Bennetts Lane Jazz Club became a much-loved institution, nurturing generations of musicians – many of whom have gone on to become leaders in the field.

In this special MIJF tribute marking ten years since his passing, acclaimed members of the Allan Browne Quintet – Eugene Ball (trumpet), Phil Noy (saxophone) and Nick Haywood (bass) – join long-time collaborators Andrea Keller (piano) and Dave Beck (drums) to perform works born of that iconic residency.

Together, these prolific Australian musicians celebrate Browne’s music, spirit and ethos, paying tribute to his enduring legacy in an unforgettable evening of inspired jazz, creativity and reflection.

“…the single most important jazz musician that Melbourne has ever produced” – Paul Grabowsky AO
