Melbourne’s jazz scene hits Moonee Valley with beloved venues in Ascot Vale, Moonee Ponds and Essendon hosting live sets from 2–6pm. Soak up the city’s best jazz in one spot or hop between them all — then cap it off with a free rooftop screening of Mo’ Better Blues at Palace Cinemas Penny Lane.

Lulu’s Social, Ascot Vale

Award-winning contemporary vocalist, Clancye Milne and German-born guitarist, Benjamin Attiche bring their heartfelt originals and favourite, feel-good jazz standards to life for this performance at Lulu’s Social.

 

Maisie Niven

Saxophonist Maisie Niven performs with double bassist Harry Birch for this intimate duo performance. Niven’s sound is grounded in her natural surroundings, with recent musical explorations and improvisations inspired by her local waterways and parklands.

 

Dean Kalait Trio

The Essendon Hotel, Essendon

Blending elements of jazz, experimental and world music, tenor saxophonist Dean Kalait and his trio perform a mixture of tunes, old and new.

 

Ennio Styles

Ennio Styles combines an unquenchable thirst for new sounds with an archival knowledge of the history of soulful music. Described as a “tastemaker” by Gilles Peterson, his Stylin’ radio show is beloved and he has DJed alongside Erykah Badu, Pharoah Sanders, Kruder & Dorfmeister and Fat Freddy’s Drop.

 

Callum Mintzis Trio

Ascot Vale Hotel, Ascot Vale

4:00pm – 6:00pm

The brainchild of trombonist and vocalist, Callum Mintzis, this trio performs and explores the music of the ’30s and ’40s — paying tribute to the rich history of trad-jazz styles in Melbourne’s musical landscape.

Penny Young, Moonee Ponds

YARA is a captivating singer-songwriter and producer, known for her smouldering and soulful vocals. Her sound is a melting pot of pop, indie RnB, neo-soul and jazz, with heavy influence from the likes of Amy Winehouse, Lianne La Havas, Emily King and H.E.R.

 

Jazz on Film: Mo’ Better Blues

Celebrating its 35th anniversary, Spike Lee’s Mo’ Better Blues is a vibrant and emotionally rich tribute to jazz and the personal sacrifices demanded by artistic greatness. Backed by a powerhouse jazz score from the Branford Marsalis Quartet and Terence Blanchard, Denzel Washington leads the film’s stellar cast. Mo’ Better Blues is part of MIJF’s Jazz on Film series.
