“A philosopher, composer, improviser, conceptualist, computer-music pioneer and trombonist, George Lewis has a mind as expansive as an ocean…. ” — Sydney Morning Herald
American composer, trombonist and MacArthur “Genius” Fellow George Lewis returns to Melbourne to premiere two new commissions, composed for an exclusive collaboration between the Monash Art Ensemble and members of Australia’s premier new music ensemble, ELISION.
A pioneering figure in experimental music, Lewis is renowned for his groundbreaking work as a composer, improviser and creative thinker. This special performance features three of his compositions, including the world premiere of two new works commissioned by the Monash Art Ensemble.
Bringing together staff and students from the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music and Performance alongside musicians from ELISION, this ambitious collaboration celebrates the spirit of experimentation, creative risk-taking and musical innovation that has defined Lewis’s remarkable career.
