Take Two: Tenderlonious

Reimagining John Coltrane's Africa/Brass

The JazzLab

Leading UK multi-instrumentalist Tenderlonious reimagines John Coltrane’s Africa/Brass in this deep-listening experience.

First launched in Brooklyn in 2018, Take Two is an immersive deep-listening experience featuring two elements: an uninterrupted, high-fidelity playback of a seminal album, followed by a live, contemporary reinterpretation by standout musicians.

In this second Australian instalment, flautist, saxophonist, producer and DJ Tenderlonious — a leading force in London’s jazz and underground scene — takes the stage at The JazzLab to reinterpret John Coltrane’s groundbreaking album Africa/Brass.

Originally released in 1961, Africa/Brass marked a bold turning point in Coltrane’s career. This landmark recording fuses sweeping orchestration and spiritual depth with African rhythms, modal structures and rich, layered textures — signalling the beginning of a new artistic chapter for the pioneering saxophonist.

Hand-picked by Tenderlonious, Africa/Brass will be reimagined live with full creative license, offering a fresh perspective on one of the most transformative works in modern jazz.

Presented in partnership with Pique-nique.
